The previous order responds to a letter that Lewis was in 1957 and sent by an American child, "Laurence Krieg." In it, the child was telling the discussion he had with his mother on the best method of reading 'The Chronicles of Narnia'. According to his mother, he must respect the order of publication, but Laurence was in favor of it according to the chronology of the events recounted. Lewis responded in another letter, saying:
"I think I agree more with your reading order with your mother. The series was not raised from the beginning as she thinks. When I wrote The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe never thought I would write more. then wrote Prince Caspian as a sequel and still did not believe there would more books. And when I finished The Voyage of the Dawn, he was convinced would be the last. But I realized I was wrong. It may not matter too much in what order they are read. In fact, I'm not entirely sure that the other books were written in the same order they were published.
The letter was used by Lewis' stepson, Douglas Gresham, to suggest other management HarperCollins books. Since then, various publishers began to list in this way, a tradition that still stands today.
However, there are other issues that claim reading according to its publication, to miss some surprises as the origin of symbolic lantern greets players in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which is revealed in The Magician's Nephew.
